Struggling UK based retailers are increasingly taking advantage of international trading opportunities to dispel domestic gloom according to Royal Mail, whose Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre is currently handling 600,000 packages per day.
The fastest growing foreign market is currently Australia, with November trading figures for the antipodean commonwealth state up by 31% on the previous year. Trade with other EU countries is also up, with even Greece ordering 21% more packages from the UK than in 2010 and strong growth in Finland (20%), Netherlands (20%) and France (19%).
Cross-border e-commerce trade with the large US market has also grown by nearly 10% in the last year. The Heathrow-based parcel-sorting centre is built on a 100,000 square metre site and features voice hybrid technology and over 11km of conveyer belt.
Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s managing director of fulfilment and packets commented: “Not only has online shopping become increasingly popular for people buying Christmas presents in the UK, our retailers are in demand with people overseas.”
